Services & Rates

Note: I am currently not booking any new clients at this time. Updated August 11th, 2018.

I offer two services: copy editing and proofreading. Definitions of what each entails can vary from editor to editor. Allow me to define how I, specifically, can help you.

Proofreading || Rate is $3.50 per 1,000 words or 0.0035 per word. (For example, if you have a 30,000 word novella, the cost would be $105.)

If your work has already been thoroughly edited, then it may just need one final read-through to correct any mistakes that have slipped through the gap. Proofreading should not be substituted for a good copy edit. If this is the first time an editor will be seeing your work, please consider copy editing instead.

What I correct during proofreading:

  • Misspelled words
  • Incorrect word usage
  • Missing or incorrect punctuation
  • Improper grammar
  • Capitalization errors

Copy Editing || Rate is $6.50 per 1,000 words or 0.0065 per word. (For example, if you have a 30,000 word novella, the cost would be $195.)

I suggest all authors get a copy edit before publication. If you’re relatively good at English and can clearly express your ideas in writing, a copy edit will take care of the majority of errors in your work, mechanics-wise. (Remember, storytelling is a different animal altogether.) Before a copy edit, please make sure you’re completely finished with any revisions or rewrites.

What I correct during copy editing:

  • Misspelled words
  • Incorrect word usage
  • Missing or incorrect punctuation
  • Improper grammar
  • Capitalization errors
  • Correction of dangling participles and dangling modifiers
  • Missing parallelism
  • Confused homophones
  • Elimination of passive voice
  • Incorrect verb tense
  • Overuse of adverbs
  • Repetitive or redundant wording

Light Line Editing || Rate is $8.00 per 1,000 words or 0.008 per word. (For example, if you have a 30,000 word novella, the cost would be $240.)

Sometimes, you need to go a bit beyond a copy edit to whip your project into shape for publication. This level of service is for those who want to make certain their prose is as clear as possible. Recommended for new writers (less than five books to your name) or ESL (English as a second language) writers.

What I correct during light line editing:

  • Misspelled words
  • Incorrect word usage
  • Missing or incorrect punctuation
  • Improper grammar
  • Capitalization errors
  • Correction of dangling participles and dangling modifiers
  • Missing parallelism
  • Confused homophones
  • Elimination of passive voice
  • Incorrect verb tense
  • Overuse of adverbs
  • Repetitive or redundant wording
  • Fact checking (You said in chapter one that Suzie’s eyes are blue. Why are they green in chapter three?)
  • Offer suggestions on how to restructure muddy sentences for greater clarity
  • Elimination of head-hopping (if unintentional)

Other Facts:

  • I will build a style sheet for each project.
  • By default, I will use Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary for spelling and The Chicago Manual of Style 17th Ed. If you wish for me to use a different style guide or dictionary, I can accommodate your request. Please let me know before I begin work on your project.
